WASSCE Exam Results in Limbo as WAEC Struggles with GHs118m Debt
Ghana's education system is facing a critical challenge as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) struggles to complete the post-examination process for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to a severe funding shortage.
The council revealed in a press statement on Dec 9, that the marking of essay and practical components was completed on November 29, 2024, but the scanning of objective test cards has been stalled due to the breakdown of scanners.
According to them, the delay has been attributed to the lack of funds needed for repairs and other operational activities.
WAEC is awaiting the release of additional funds, totaling GHC118,000,000.00, from the Ministry of Education to enable the scanning process and other post-examination processes to continue smoothly. The council has urged students, parents, and other stakeholders to disregard unofficial dates circulating on social media, emphasizing that the results will only be released once all post-examination challenges are resolved.
The funding shortage has not only affected the examination process but also impacted the livelihoods of examination officials and suppliers who are yet to be paid. WAEC has appealed to these individuals to exercise patience, assuring them that payment for their services will be made as soon as the needed funds are released from the Ministry of Education.
“The Council is awaiting the release of additional funds out of the outstanding balance of GHC118,000,000.00 from the Ministry of Education to enable the scanning process and other post-examination processes to continue smoothly.''
“Payment for their services will be made as soon as the needed funds are released from the Ministry of Education,” portions of the stament read.
