Renowned Ghanaian Playwright Dr. Mohammed Ben Abdallah Dead at 81
Ghana's vibrant cultural landscape has lost a luminary with the passing of celebrated playwright and theatre scholar Dr. Mohammed ben Abdallah. He died on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of artists and intellectuals.
Dr. Abdallah's academic journey began with a Teacher's Certificate 'A' from Wesley College, Kumasi. He later earned a diploma in Drama and Theatre Studies from the University of Ghana, Legon, and went on to pursue further studies in the United States, obtaining an MFA in Theatre Arts from the University of Georgia in 1976 and a PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980.
Dr. Abdallah played a pivotal role in the creation of the National Theatre of Ghana, overseeing its construction, developing its organizational framework, and establishing resident companies, including the National Drama Company, National Dance Company, and Pan-African Orchestra. His theatrical style uniquely blended traditional African performance with European elements, often reflecting postcolonial themes.
Some of his notable works include "The Trial of Mallam Ilya and Other Plays" (1987) and "Land of A Million Magicians" (1993). He also directed several productions, including "The Trial of Mallam Ilya" (1982-1983), "Verdict of the Cobra" (1984-present), and "The Slaves" (1984-1985).
Dr. Abdallah's influence extended beyond the arts. He served as Secretary for Education and Culture under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) in the 1980s and 1990s, implementing the National Education Reform Programme aimed at expanding access to education and enhancing quality. He also served as Head of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana.
Dr. Abdallah's daughter, Dr. Akosua Abdallah, a veteran actress and lecturer at the University of Ghana, announced his passing in a Facebook post, describing him as a man of wisdom, humility, and unwavering faith who served his people, family, and country with honor and grace. According to Islamic customs, Dr. Abdallah was laid to rest on Friday, September 19, 2025, after Jumu'ah prayers in Kumasi, with a three-day Dua scheduled to take place in the city.
