Fresh wave of violence hits Ghana's Bawku Region as death toll rises to 32
A fresh wave of violence has swept through Ghana's Bawku region, leaving three people dead, including a schoolgirl, and many more injured. The latest fatalities bring the death toll to 32, as the region teeters on the brink of chaos.
The violence erupted on Friday, November 29, 2024, in the Gingande-Zongo area, where several homes were set ablaze. The gunfire, which began around midnight, continued unabated until approximately 1 PM, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.
The Bawku region has been plagued by violence since late October 2024, with rival groups clashing and ambushes targeting travelers. The conflict's resurgence follows the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, which some sources claim has fueled the renewed hostilities.
Local authorities are under pressure to restore order, but the situation remains tense and unpredictable. The region's history of ethnic and chieftaincy disputes has been further destabilized by the ongoing attacks, leaving residents and security forces struggling to contain the situation.
