Chieftaincy Clash Turns Deadly in Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo, 4 Killed, 6 Wounded

Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo, North East Region, Ghana - 01 Mar, 2025 - A brutal attack on two communities in Ghana's North East Region has left four people dead and six others nursing gunshot wounds.
The bloody assault, which occurred on Friday, February 28, in the Nanik and Nganme Gberuk communities of the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo district, is believed to be linked to a long-standing chieftaincy dispute.
Eyewitnesses describe the chaos as assailants stormed the communities, setting homes ablaze and leaving a trail of destruction. A teacher from the Nanik community was among the victims, tragically perishing in his burning home. Despite speculation linking his death to the Mamprusi-Bimoba conflict in the Bawku area, his family has dismissed these claims, attributing his death to the unfortunate circumstances.
In an emotional interview with Channel One News, a family member of the deceased appealed for calm, urging workers in the area to exercise caution and consider relocating temporarily until peace is restored. The victim was laid to rest in the community on Saturday morning, as tensions remain high in the troubled region.
