Over 100 Court Cases Stalling Completion of $350m Ofankor-Nsawam Road Project

Accra, Ghana - 17 Feb, 2025 - The Ofankor-Nsawam road project worth $350 million, has hit a snag due to legal issues, according to Nasir Ahmad Yartey, the Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

On the Citi Breakfast Show, Yartey revealed that court cases have hindered the contractor's efforts bringing construction to a standstill until the disputes are resolved.

He stated that the numerous court cases - over 100 - have effectively brought the project to a standstill, with the contractor unable to proceed with critical construction work. This has resulted in widespread frustration among local residents and daily commuters, who are impacted by the delay.

He added that at the heart of the court disputes are property owners contesting demolition orders or seeking financial compensation.

“The major challenge on that road [Ofankor-Nsawam] has to do with court issues. Somewhere last year, we had over 100 court cases that had to do with the project and we have been able to clear about 20 of them and as I speak to you, between Amasaman and Nsawam, there are about 80 of them and these court cases does not allow the contractor the right of way to work,'' he stated.

“We cannot take the law into our own hands if we need to demolish a particular property and the owner is litigating it in court, there is little you can do,'' he added.
