CHASS Calls for Delay in Reopening SHSs Over Unpaid Debts
Dr. Yaw Osei Adu Twum is Ghana's Minister of Education

Ghana's Senior High Schools are facing a financial crisis, with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) warning that the government's failure to release outstanding funds could disrupt the upcoming academic year.

The government owes significant arrears on perishable items, unpaid utility bills, and other essential expenses, which are crippling the ability of schools to operate effectively. According to CHASS, despite previous assurances from the Minister of Education, including a promise made during a Zoom meeting on December 18, 2024, the funds remain unpaid.

In a statement, CHASS urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to prioritize the release of these funds to prevent a crisis when schools reopen on January 3, 2025. The association emphasized that without these resources, school heads will struggle to provide quality education, maintain infrastructure, and ensure student welfare.
