Wontumi's Lawyer Denies Bank Account Freeze Reports, Cites Lack of Official Communication from FIC
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as 'Chairman Wontumi'

Accra, Ghana - 24 April, 2025 - Ghanaian politician Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has denied reports that the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has frozen his bank accounts.

According to his lawyers, they have not received any official communication from the FIC or the affected banks regarding the alleged freeze.

The reports claimed that the FIC had taken action under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, citing suspected financial irregularities linked to Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining.

However, his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has disclosed to Citi News that  they are waiting for the official documents to respond and defend his client's position.

“We just received this communication from my client. The instruction is that the FIC sent an order to freeze the account of my client. We hope that we will be served with the appropriate processes, and we will make a presentation.

“We will respond in equal measure and defend the position of my client. No, the communication came from the advocacy through the press and was forwarded to me. We’re waiting for the processes to initiate our defence,” Appiah-Kubi explained.

The development comes amid increased scrutiny of Chairman Wontumi's mining operations and calls for greater accountability in Ghana's extractive sector.

The lawyer has also revealed plans to challenge the reported revocation of Akonta Mining's lease in court, with legal documents being finalized for filing.

“We’re processing the writ, and my duty is to proofread the drafting and then get it filed. If we’re early enough, we will be able to do it this afternoon (April 24) otherwise we will do it on Friday, April 25,” he added.
