WHO Donates Essential Medicines to Combat Meningitis Outbreak in Ghana

Accra, Ghana - 18 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's Ministry of Health has received a crucial donation of essential health commodities from the World Health Organization (WHO) to bolster its response to a meningitis outbreak in the country's northern region.
The donated items, including the meningitis medication Ceftriaxone, are expected to treat over 300 affected individuals.
Dr Frank Lule, WHO Representative to Ghana, expressed his excitement at presenting the commodities in the fight against meningitis and reiterated that WHO remains fully available and ready to provide additional support whenever needed.
According to Health Minister Mintah Akando, the outbreak is currently under control, thanks in part to technical assistance from the WHO. The minister assured the public that sufficient antibiotics are available to treat those affected and urged citizens to report any symptoms to the nearest health facility, emphasizing the importance of timely medical attention in managing the outbreak.
He added that a response team is set to be deployed to the northern region to alleviate the burden of the outbreak.
Meningitis outbreaks are a recurring challenge in Ghana, particularly during the dry season. The disease has also been reported in several districts, including Wenchi, Tain, and Techiman Municipal, with Streptococcus pneumonia identified as the main causative agent.
