Akandoh Calls for End to Nurses' Strike
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is Ghana's Health Minister

Accra, Ghana - 08 June, 2025 - Ghana's Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has made a heartfelt appeal to the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to suspend its ongoing industrial action.

The strike, which has brought the country's healthcare system to a grinding halt, has entered its second week, leaving patients and families in distress.

Minister Akandoh's plea comes on the heels of a nationwide tour of health facilities, where he witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the strike on healthcare delivery. With patients struggling to access essential medical care, the Minister emphasized the need for a swift resolution to the impasse.

While acknowledging the nurses' legitimate concerns, Akandoh stressed that the strike is not a viable solution. Instead, he urged GRNMA to return to the negotiation table to find a mutually beneficial solution.

“I will continue to appeal to them that in all these matters, what we have to do is to put the patient first. In my humble opinion, I do not think that a strike is what will resolve the issue at the end of the day. No matter what, at the end of the day, we need to sit around the table to resolve the matter. I am still calling them, let us sit around the table and let’s find a lasting solution to this matter,'' he stated while addressing the media on Thursday, June 5.

The Minister's appeal is aimed at prioritizing patients' well-being and ensuring that the healthcare system continues to function effectively.
