Threats Against President Mahama Earn TikToker 7-Month Jail Term
Accra ,Ghana – September 17,2025 - David Kwodow Prah Afful, a Ghanaian TikToker popularly known as Kwame Nkrumah II, has been sentenced to seven months in prison for issuing death threats against President John Dramani Mahama, Members of Parliament, and other government officials. The Accra Circuit Court handed down the sentence after Afful pleaded guilty to charges of threat of death and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.
The conviction stemmed from a viral TikTok livestream in which Afful made violent threats against government officials, journalists, and civil servants using official green number plates. He also threatened to burn marketplaces and encouraged others to carry out similar acts of violence. The video sparked widespread outrage, prompting the Ghana Police Service to swiftly arrest Afful at his hideout near Kasoa Market on September 13, 2025.
The police emphasized that while they uphold freedom of speech, they will not tolerate statements that incite violence, insecurity, or public disorder. "While the Ghana Police Service upholds freedom of expression, it will not tolerate statements that incite violence, insecurity, or public disorder," the police stated.
During the court proceedings, Afful pleaded for forgiveness, admitting that his behavior was reckless and regrettable. Despite his apology, the court handed down a seven-month prison sentence, serving as both punishment and deterrent against similar conduct.
Afful’s case highlights the growing concern over the misuse of social media platforms to spread misinformation, issue threats, or promote violence. The court's ruling underscores the importance of responsible social media use and the consequences of crossing the line into incitement or threats against public officials.
