Natural Resources Minister Urges Calm Amid Asanko Gold Tensions

Ghana – September 16,2025 - Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has pledged the government's commitment to swiftly resolving the ongoing dispute between Asanko Gold Ghana Limited and local communities. During a site visit on September 16, 2024, the Minister emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence between the company and the community, assuring stakeholders that the government would address underlying grievances and work towards a lasting solution.

"As a government, we are committed to getting to the bottom of this matter and ensuring that such a tragedy is not repeated. Dialogue and mutual understanding must prevail," he emphasized.

Recent tensions led to the destruction of property and equipment valued at over $33 million and resulted in a fatality on September 9.

Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah met with the company's management and community leaders, urging them to prioritize peaceful coexistence. He also visited the family of the deceased Assembly Member, commiserating with the bereaved family and assuring them of a thorough investigation into the incident.

The conflict between Asanko Gold and local communities has been brewing due to unmet development expectations. Community members expressed frustration, stating that their expectations had not been met, leading them to encroach on the company's concession. This resulted in a confrontation between military personnel and community members, causing significant damage and loss of life.
