Suspended Chief Justice Knows Where to Report Threats or Seek Redress - Kwakye Ofosu
Accra, Ghana - 25 June, 2025 - The Ghanaian government has responded to allegations made by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who claims to have received threats aimed at forcing her to resign from office.
Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has downplayed the significance of the suspended Chief Justice's decision to publicly air her concerns.
Speaking at a press briefing on June 25, Mr. Ofosu suggested that Justice Torkornoo, as a seasoned jurist, should be aware of the appropriate institutions to report such threats to. "The Chief Justice, more than anybody else, perhaps in this country, should be aware of the platform that is available to address such threats," he said. "If today, someone sends you a threat, you know where to go to seek redress in the matter, and that is what I will say about it."
Justice Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, following a prima facie determination by President John Dramani Mahama in consultation with the Council of State. The suspension is part of constitutional proceedings under Article 146(10), which outlines the process for the potential removal of a Chief Justice.
