I've Received Threats to Resign or Suffer Harm - Justice Torkornoo

Accra, Ghana - 25 June, 2025 - Ghana's suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, has spoken out about the impeachment proceedings against her, alleging that she has received threats aimed at forcing her to resign.

She made the disclosure at a press conference in Accra on June 25, where she also criticized the committee investigating the petitions against her.

According to Justice Torkornoo, the committee's proceedings are being conducted in a biased manner, with the petitioners' lawyers controlling the flow of information and selectively presenting evidence.

She expressed concerns that this approach undermines the neutrality required in such inquiries and violates established protocols.

“The proceedings are being conducted as if it is a normal litigation between the petitioners and myself. Their lawyers now choose and pick which part of the evidence that public officials present to put on the table,'' she stated.

“This is also in violation of known rules regarding the proceedings of a committee of enquiry.”

The suspended Chief Justice revealed that she has received threats of personal harm if she fails to step down voluntarily.

She emphasized that these threats are an attempt to coerce her into resigning or retiring, rather than allowing the impeachment process to run its course.

“I have also received threats to the effect that if I failed to resign or retire voluntarily, I will be made to suffer some harm or the other,” she said.
