Electricity Tariffs to Rise by 2.45% from July 1 - PURC
Accra, Ghana - 25 June, 2025 - The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 2.45% increase in electricity tariffs for all customer categories, effective July 1, 2025.
The decision is part of the Commission's quarterly review mechanism, which takes into account various macroeconomic and operational factors.
According to the PURC, the tariff adjustment is necessary to ensure the sustainability of utility service providers and maintain a reliable electricity supply. The Commission cited a projected average inflation rate of 20.67% and a Ghana Cedi to US Dollar exchange rate of GHS10.3052 as key factors influencing the decision.
The new tariffs will see lifeline customers (0-30kWh) paying GHp79.53/kWh, up from GHp77.63/kWh, while residential users (0-300kWh) will pay GHp180.19/kWh. Non-residential users (301+kWh) will face a tariff of GHp202.17/kWh, and High Voltage Mines customers will pay GHp508.09/kWh.
The PURC has, however, maintained water tariffs at current levels, with a 0.00% adjustment rate for the third quarter of 2025. The Commission noted that despite economic pressures, current water rates are sustainable for now, providing some relief to consumers.
The PURC has urged consumers to take note of the new electricity tariffs and plan accordingly, as the adjustment takes effect next month. The Commission emphasized that the quarterly reviews are necessary to maintain the real value of tariffs and uphold the financial health of utility service providers.
