Parliamentary Probe into Vetting Chaos Put on Hold Indefinitely

Accra, Ghana - 05 Feb, 2025 - A parliamentary committee investigating the violent disruptions that marred a vetting session on January 30 has suspended its proceedings, citing directives from the Clerk of Parliament.

The committee, chaired by Emmanuel Bedzschrah, was established to examine the events surrounding the clash between Minority and Majority MPs, which resulted in the destruction of property and the suspension of four lawmakers.

According to Bedzschrah, the Clerk of Parliament, Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, instructed the committee to suspend its sitting until further notice, pending additional instructions from the Speaker of Parliament.

“We’re getting indications from the clerk of Parliament and I want to put it on record that, the clerk of Parliament has instructed that we suspend the sitting until further notice.

“And therefore I want everybody to be aware that it is not the committee that has decided to stop but the clerk to the Parliament of Ghana has requested that until he gets further instruction from the speaker, the committee should suspend sitting,'' he stated.

The incident occurred during the vetting of two nominees, Okudzeto Ablakwa and Kwabena Mintah Akandwah, and resulted in a physical confrontation between MPs. The Minority subsequently walked out, allowing the Majority to proceed with the vetting process.

To gather information, the committee created a WhatsApp platform for public input. The committee comprises seven members, including Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Gizella Akushika Tetteh-Agbotui, Abena Osei Asare, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, and Bede Anwataazuma Ziedeng.

The committee has a 10-day deadline to report its findings and recommendations.
