Assurances Committee to Put Govt Under Spotlight in July 2025 Public Hearing

Accra, Ghana - 18 May, 2025 - The Parliamentary Committee on Assurances is set to conduct a public hearing in July 2025 to scrutinize the Executive arm of government over unfulfilled promises made on the floor of Parliament.

Chairman Dominic Nitiwul emphasized the committee's commitment to holding government officials accountable for their words and actions.

The hearing aims to assess whether statements and assurances made by Ministers and other state officials have been executed. Mr. Nitiwul highlighted the importance of effective communication and diplomacy in ensuring the committee's mandate is carried out smoothly.

"This is no small task, it requires meticulous attention to detail, a thorough understanding of Parliamentary procedure, and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively.

"It is the duty of members of this committee to hold office holders who make assurances to Parliament responsible for their words and to ensure that the representatives of the people monitor promises and undertakings by office holders," Mr Nitiwul stated during a three-day capacity-building workshop for members of the committee in Koforidua

Ranking Member Muhammad Bawah Braimah stressed that the committee will work together, beyond party lines, to ensure promises made to the people are fulfilled. This move is seen as a step towards promoting transparency and accountability in Ghana's governance.

"We represent the people, our first interest is to see to the betterment of our people. We will ensure that promises made on the floor of Parliament and to our people are executed.

"It shall not be the usual NDC/NPP politics. We will work together to ensure that promises made on the floor of Parliament are well executed," he said.

The public hearing is expected to provide a platform for the committee to scrutinize government officials and hold them accountable for their promises. This move is seen as a step towards promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
