Order Restored in Ejura After Police Station Attack

Ejura, Ghana 11 Jan, 2025 -  Ghana Police has stated that order has been restored in Ejura after a violent mob attack on the local police station, sparked by the death of a suspect in custody.

In a statement, the Police revealed that the incident began on Friday evening, January 10, 2025, when police arrested a man for alleged theft. The suspect was detained overnight but fell ill around 2:20 am and was rushed to the Ejura Government Hospital, where he later died.

According to the Police, as arrangements were being made to transfer the body for autopsy, a group of community members attacked the police station, setting it on fire. The mob then proceeded to the hospital, where they forcibly took possession of the body.

Police managed to restore calm through engagements with local leaders and de-escalation efforts, with no reported casualties. The military was deployed to support law and order, and the Ghana National Fire Service extinguished the fire at the police station.

"As arrangements were being made to transfer the body to the morgue for preservation and autopsy, some members of the Ejura community attacked the police station, setting it ablaze. A section of the mob then followed to the hospital and forcibly took possession of the body," the Police said in a statement.
