NDC Rejects Akwatia Parliamentary Results
A contentious dispute has erupted over the Akwatia constituency seat in Ghana's Eastern Region, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) rejecting the Electoral Commission's declaration of Ernest Yaw Kumi as the MP-elect.
At the heart of the controversy is a disagreement over the validity of the results, with the NDC citing inconsistencies and irregularities in the collation process. The party's representative, Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, has described the declaration as "illegal, unfounded, and non-existent,'' in an interview with Joy News.
“They don’t have a pink sheet at all; they have photocopies of what is considered the pink sheet.''
“She actually said she would engage with the Commission and get back to me. When she called back, they claimed they had finished and had declared the results,” he added.
The Electoral Commission's decision to relocate the collation of disputed results to the Police Training School in Tesano, Greater Accra, has also been questioned by the NDC. The party claims that the process was conducted in their absence, despite their objections.
In a statement released on Dec 12, the NDC stated that they were '' utterly shocked at the news of the declaration by the Electoral Commmission of Ernest Kumi, the NPP candidate as the winner in the just ended elections.
''We hereby condemn this unfair and unilateral move by the EC and wish to assure our rank and file that we reject the said declaration and that we shall take every legitimate step set aside the said declaration.''
The dispute over the Akwatia seat is one of several controversies surrounding Ghana's recent parliamentary elections. The NDC has secured 185 seats, while the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has secured 77, with four independent MPs-elect and several seats still outstanding due to disputes.
