We won’t misuse parliamentary majority - President-elect Mahama
In a meeting with the National Chief Imam, Ghana's President-elect John Dramani Mahama underscored his commitment to consensus-driven governance, vowing to engage the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the decision-making process.

Ghana's President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to utilise his party's overwhelming parliamentary majority for the betterment of the nation, rather than exploiting it for political gain.

In a meeting with the National Chief Imam, Mr Mahama pledged to adopt a consensus-driven approach, actively seeking input from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Mahama's assurance comes as a welcome respite, following concerns that the National Democratic Congress's (NDC) substantial majority could lead to unchecked decision-making. By committing to cross-party collaboration, the President-elect aims to foster a spirit of cooperation and national unity.

Furthermore, Mr Mahama has reaffirmed his dedication to revitalising Ghana's economy and restoring its status as a beacon of progress in Africa. Acknowledging the daunting challenges ahead, he has labelled the election victory as merely the "easy part," emphasising that the true test lies in the hard work required to rebuild the nation.

As Mr Mahama prepares to assume office, he has urged his future appointees to embrace the challenges ahead, warning that it will not be "business as usual."

“I wish to assure my father [National Chief Imam] and our fathers that we're not going to misuse the majority we have in Parliament. Even though we have a huge majority, more than two-thirds, we're not going to misuse it.

“We are going to consult with the NPP at every stage and make sure that we do things by consensus instead of railroading everybody," he said.

''We can only move this country together if all of us work to move it together.”

“So I can assure you that we will work together. We'll continue to consult you. I'm your son, and you all have been very gracious with advice and good counsel. I've enjoyed working with all of you over the years, and nothing is going to change. My doors will be open at any time that any of our leaders, my fathers want to see me, for you to come and consult with me. And so we ask that you continue to offer your prayers,'' he added.
