Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana's current Minister of Defence

Accra, Ghana – 31 July, 2025 – The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has initiated a thorough investigation into the actions of some of its personnel involved in an altercation with a Joy News journalist and an eyewitness near a demolition site along the Spintex Road in Accra.

The probe follows a directive from the Presidency, emphasizing the government's commitment to accountability and transparency.

Joy News journalist Carlos Calony was detained by National Security operatives while covering the demolition of a warehouse under construction. An eyewitness who attempted to film the arrest was allegedly assaulted by a soldier. The circumstances surrounding Calony's arrest remain unclear, sparking sharp criticism from press freedom advocates and civil society organizations.

The government has condemned the actions of the soldiers and security personnel, describing them as "utterly unacceptable". Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, reaffirmed the Mahama administration's commitment to press freedom and safety, stating, "A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse".

President John Mahama has directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to conduct a full investigation and apply disciplinary measures without delay.

The GAF has assured the public that the investigation will be thorough, and those found culpable will face consequences. Captain VA Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, emphasized the military's commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct. The outcome of the investigation is awaited, with many expecting swift action to be taken against any personnel found guilty of misconduct.
