Helicopter Crash: Nation Bids a Big Farewell to Dr. Murtala Muhammed and Alhaji Muniru

Accra, Ghana – 11 August, 2025 - Ghana bid a final farewell to two of its distinguished sons, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator. The two Muslim statesmen were laid to rest on Sunday, August 10, 2025, following a solemn Janaizah prayer ceremony at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra.

The funeral rites were conducted in accordance with Islamic customs and practices, with the burial taking place at the Military Cemetery in Accra. The ceremony drew high-profile dignitaries, including government officials, Members of Parliament, party leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the diplomatic corps. 

President John Dramani Mahama and other leaders paid their last respects to the deceased, describing them as dedicated public servants who made significant contributions to Ghana's development.

Mourners described Dr. Murtala Mohammed as a principled politician and a fearless voice in Parliament, while Alhaji Muniru was remembered as a dedicated security chief who worked tirelessly for Ghana's safety. 

The atmosphere was solemn, with tributes highlighting their years of service, personal integrity, and commitment to the nation. President Mahama prayed that God would grant the souls of the deceased eternal peace and paradise.

The two leaders were among eight people who lost their lives in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The crash claimed the lives of prominent government officials and military personnel, sending shockwaves across the nation.

The nation observed a three-day mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast and tributes pouring in from all walks of life. A state funeral for all eight victims will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra, providing an opportunity for the nation to collectively pay tribute to those lost in the tragedy.
