Ghana Education Service Closes Three Senior High Schools in Upper East Region Due to Violence

Accra, Ghana – 31 July, 2025 – The Ghana Education Service (GES) has temporarily shut down Bawku Senior High School, Nalerigu Senior High School, and Zuarungu Senior High School in the Upper East Region following a series of violent incidents that resulted in loss of life, injuries, and destruction of school property. The incidents occurred between July 20 and 26, 2025.

The GES has expressed deep concern over the disruptions to academic activities, particularly for final-year students preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). To mitigate this, the GES is working with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and school authorities to establish alternative examination centers and secure locations for SHS 3 students to take their exams safely.

For students in SHS 1 and 2, the GES is exploring remote and alternative learning options to ensure continuity of teaching during the temporary closure. Further details on these interventions will be announced in the coming days.

The GES commended the swift evacuation of students by government authorities and security personnel, led by the Ministry of the Interior. The Service reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with security agencies to maintain peace and protect life and property on school campuses.

The GES urged stakeholders, community leaders, parents, and law enforcement agencies to support efforts to maintain peace, discipline, and the sanctity of educational institutions. The Service extended its sincerest condolences to the bereaved families and the entire school communities, assuring them of its full support during this difficult time.
