Mahama Nominates Seven New Justices for Supreme Court

Jubilee House, Accra - 30 April, 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has sent a list of seven nominees to the Supreme Court of Ghana to Parliament for approval, as mandated by Article 144(2) of the country's 1992 Constitution.

The nominees include Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.

If approved, these Justices of the Court of Appeal will join the highest court in the land, playing a crucial role in shaping Ghana's legal landscape. The Supreme Court has the final say on matters of law and the Constitution, and its decisions have far-reaching implications for the country.

The nomination process is a critical aspect of ensuring the judiciary's independence and effectiveness.

According to Ghana's  Constitution, the President's nominations are subject to parliamentary approval, providing a check on the executive's power.

Ghana's judiciary has been recognized for its independence and impartiality, with the country consistently ranking high in terms of rule of law and democratic governance in Africa. The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights has praised Ghana's judiciary for upholding human rights and the rule of law.

The nominees' backgrounds and qualifications will likely be scrutinized by Parliament during the approval process. Once approved, they will take on significant roles in interpreting the law and ensuring justice is served at the highest level.
