Bawku Peace Talks Hit Snag, Manhyia Palace to Confirm New Date

Manhyia, Kumasi, Ghana - 30 April, 2025 - The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has temporarily postponed efforts to broker peace in the long-standing Bawku conflict, sources close to the Manhyia Palace have confirmed.
The peace initiative, which had garnered widespread support nationwide, was expected to make significant progress on April 28 but has been delayed due to the complexities surrounding the chieftaincy dispute.
The mediation, originally scheduled to take place from April 28 to May 1 at the Manhyia Palace, aimed to bring stability to the troubled region. While a new date for the resumption of the talks has yet to be officially announced, many Ghanaians are hopeful that Otumfuo's leadership will ultimately lead to a lasting resolution.
The Bawku conflict, centered on a chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities, has been ongoing for years, causing displacement, loss of life, and economic hardship.
The conflict has deep historical roots, with both sides claiming traditional authority over the Bawku area. Previous attempts at peace have been met with challenges, and the region remains volatile.
