Kukurantumi Police Station Shut Down After Violent Attack by Youths Over Suspect's Death
Kukurantumi, Ghana - In a shocking turn of events, the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region has been closed down and all personnel withdrawn following a violent attack by some youths in the town on September 21, 2025. The attack, which occurred at approximately 7:00 AM, was reportedly triggered by the death of a suspect known as Bright Kena alias D-ball while in police custody.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the youths attacked the police station and barracks with stones, clubs, and other implements. The mob also attempted to set the building on fire following the death of Bright Kena, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and stealing. The suspect was on admission at the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi at the time of the incident.
A police reinforcement team was swiftly deployed to the scene and managed to restore calm, law, and order. The Eastern Regional Police Command has since engaged with the deceased's family and other community leaders, assuring them of a thorough investigation into the matter. Both the Police Professional Standards Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding Bright Kena's death.
The police are reviewing video footage of the attack to identify, arrest, and bring the perpetrators to justice. In a statement signed by Supt. Mr. George Peprah Mills, Staff Officer for the Eastern Region's Public Affairs Unit, the Command urged the public to use lawful means to resolve issues instead of resorting to violence.
