Kufuor's endorsement of Bawumia is a big blot on his political career - Alan Kyerematen
Accra, Ghana - Nov 18, 2024 - Ghana's presidential race just got more intense with former President John Agyekum Kufuor publicly endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) flagbearer, for the 2024 general elections.
This move has sparked strong disapproval from Alan Kyerematen, the presidential candidate for the Movement for Change.
Kufuor's endorsement of Bawumia has been seen as a surprise, given his previous support for Kyerematen. During his presidency, Kufuor praised Kyerematen's economic skills and even backed him over Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 presidential election.
However, Kufuor now describes Bawumia as a visionary leader, capable of guiding Ghana through its current economic challenges.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV on Nov 18, Kyerematen criticized Kufuor's endorsement, arguing that it undermines the impartiality expected of a statesman.
According to him, Kufuor's actions have damaged his reputation and drawn widespread criticism and insults.
Kyerematen also expressed disappointment, calling Kufuor's endorsement a "big blot" on his political career.
“Kufuor is my uncle and an elderly person, and I don’t want to say something publicly against him. But what he has done, has created a big blot on his political career. Do you realise how people have started making derogatory comments about him? Don’t you hear the insults? Look at the kind of people insulting him.
“He’s very respected in Ghana, so why would he now be engaging in politics of this nature? He’s my uncle and his actions are bad, he’s treading on dangerous ground, and he has to stop. He knows what he’s doing.”
