JUSAG Warns of Industrial Action Over Salary Review Delays

Accra, Ghana - 2 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's judicial support staff are pressing for a speedy approval of their proposed salary increases, amid concerns over delays in the review process. The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has petitioned Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to intervene and expedite the process.
The association's call for action follows the submission of the Judicial Council's recommendations for salary reviews and related allowances to President Akufo-Addo.
In a statement on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, JUSAG welcomed the President's directive to Parliament to consider the budgets of the Audit Service, Parliamentary Service, and the Judicial Service, which include provisions for compensation.
However, with the approval process dragging on, JUSAG has warned that it may resort to industrial action if the government fails to implement the new salary structure promptly. The association has devised a range of strategies to address potential delays, emphasizing that it is "keenly monitoring the progress".
This development comes after JUSAG's previous strike in May 2023, which was called off after the President approved the reviewed salaries, with implementation scheduled for July 2023.
"As of yesterday [December 30], the official feedback on the matter is that the recommendation of the Judicial Council is receiving the highest attention of His Excellency, the President of Ghana. The reports have been referred to the Minister of Finance for an update on the status of the request.''
"We are keenly monitoring the progress. We have also mapped out a number of industrial
action tools that could be activated should the government unduly delay the approval and implementation," portions of the statement read.
