NPP Names Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader

Accra, Ghana - 2 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP) has unveiled its leadership team for the 9th Parliament, marking a significant step in the party's strategy to navigate the upcoming legislative session.

At the helm of the NPP's parliamentary team is Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who takes on the role of Minority Leader. He will be supported by Patricia Apiagyei as Deputy Minority Leader, Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Minority Whip, and Davies Opoku as Second Deputy Minority Whip.

The NPP's leadership selection comes as the party seeks to reassert its influence in the 9th Parliament, following a disappointing showing in the 2024 general elections. The party suffered a significant loss of seats, securing just 81 seats compared to the 137 it held in the previous parliament.

In contrast, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged as the dominant force, securing over 180 seats and becoming the majority party in the 9th Parliament.
