Enough is Enough: TEWU-TUC Directs Members to Stay Home Until Demands are Met
Accra,Ghana - September 23,2025 - The Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) has directed its members to remain at home until the government meets their demands, intensifying its industrial action over poor conditions of service. The union's chairperson, Salamatu Braimah, announced this decision at an emergency meeting with members at the University of Ghana, emphasizing that the strike will continue until their demands are met.
The union's demands include immediate signing of conditions of service for junior staff in public and technical universities, non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES), and staff of the Ghana Library Authority and Museums and Monuments Board. The union is also pushing for the inclusion of non-teaching staff of the GES in the Continuous Professional Development Allowance, resolution of promotion-related issues, and Fair Wages and Salaries Commission intervention to address all outstanding matters and conclude agreements without delay.
The strike, which began on Friday, September 19, 2025, has affected operations in public schools and education-related institutions nationwide. TEWU-TUC accuses the government of failing to address long-standing concerns of non-teaching staff despite exhausting all laid-down procedures. "We cannot continue to operate under an expired condition of service from 2008 to date. We are saying that enough is enough," Braimah stated. She insisted that TEWU will only call off the action if the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission receives the appropriate mandate from the Ministry of Finance and other government employers to conclude negotiations.
The union has warned employers against intimidating staff who decide to participate in the strike, emphasizing that it is their lawful right to do so. The government has yet to respond to TEWU-TUC's demands, and the strike continues to impact the education sector.
