Jurors Down Tools Over Over 8-Months Unpaid Allowances

Accra, Ghana - 03 June, 2025 - A group of jurors at the Accra High Court has gone on strike, effective June 2, due to the non-payment of their allowances for eight months.

Despite numerous attempts to retrieve their payments, the jurors claim they have been met with no concrete assurance from the Judiciary Service regarding when the arrears will be settled.

The jurors had formally notified the Acting Chief Justice of their intended absence, but the lack of response has led them to take drastic action.

According to Joshua Alorgbey, a spokesperson for the group, the situation is a clear disregard for their welfare and financial security.

“We are in the eighth month, and they have not paid the jurors as I speak. The jurors have served a notice to the acting Chief Justice and the Judiciary Service that they are embarking on a strike from today, June 2,'' he stated in an interview with Citi News on Monday, June 2.

He revealed that the jurors have been meeting with the Acting Chief Justice and the Judicial Service since October 2024, but the meetings have yielded no tangible results.

“We had a series of meetings with the acting Chief Justice and the Judicial Service. The series of meetings began in October 2024, but they kept postponing it. The legal year will end very soon. What will become of our money? We cannot continue refinancing or going to court anymore,” he said.
