Government Cancels All School Feeding Programme Contracts

Accra, Ghana - 02 May, 2025 - Ghana's government has abruptly terminated the contracts of all caterers under the Ghana School Feeding Programme, a flagship initiative aimed at boosting school enrolment and retention by providing free meals to pupils in public basic schools.

According to the announcement made on May 2, 2025, current caterers are barred from supplying meals for the third term of the 2024/2025 academic year.

“Please be informed that contracts of all caterers of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) nationwide have been terminated with immediate effect. Accordingly, no existing caterer on the programme should cook for the third term of the 2024/2025 academic year,'' portions of the statement read.

The Ghana School Feeding Programme Secretariat has guaranteed payment of outstanding arrears to caterers for work done in the second term.

“All outstanding arrears for the second term of the 2024/2025 academic year will be paid in due course,” it said.

The termination is part of a larger restructuring effort, with new caterer recruitment guidelines expected to be released shortly, according to the Secretariat.

“The GSFP Secretariat, as part of its ongoing restructuring exercise, will soon announce the modalities for the recruitment of new caterers for the programme,” the statement added.

The move has significant implications for the programme, which has been a key component of the government's efforts to improve education outcomes in Ghana. The programme's restructuring is likely to impact thousands of pupils who rely on the free meals, as well as the caterers who provide the services.

The Ghana School Feeding Programme was introduced to address hunger and malnutrition among school-going children, particularly in deprived areas.
