Finance Ministry approves $30m payment to Sunon Asogli
Ghana's Finance Ministry has directed the Controller and Accountant General to pay $30 million to Sunon Asogli, an independent power producer, as part of a new agreement to resolve the debt issues that led to the shutdown of its 560-megawatt power plant, according to Norvan reports.
The plant was closed due to the Electricity Company of Ghana's (ECG) outstanding debt of $259 million ⁴ ⁵.
According to Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, Sunon Asogli's management acted in "bad faith" by shutting down the plant, which is a critical component of Ghana's energy infrastructure. The minister explained that the government had agreed to pay $30 million to Sunon Asogli, but the company demanded an additional $30 million, leading to the shutdown.
The finance ministry's directive to pay the $30 million is aimed at resolving the debt crisis and preventing further disruptions to Ghana's power supply.
Dr. Amin Adam reassured the public that a resolution is on the horizon and that the country's electricity supply remains unaffected due to surplus generation capacity.
