Ghana to Establish Green City Spanning Greater Accra, Volta, and Eastern Regions

Ghana is set to embark on an ambitious project to establish a new green city that will span across the Greater Accra, Volta, and Eastern regions. The city, designed to showcase modern urban planning, sustainable energy systems, and smart infrastructure, is expected to be a game-changer for the country's economic development.

President John Dramani Mahama announced the project during a recent visit to China, where he wooed Chinese investors to participate in the landmark initiative. The proposed city will be developed over 20 years in four phases, with the first phase expected to begin before the end of President Mahama's tenure.

The green city is envisioned as a model for sustainable, technologically advanced urban living, incorporating cutting-edge technology in urban design, planning, and innovation. The project forms part of Ghana's 24-hour economy and reset agenda, aimed at creating jobs, stimulating private investment, and driving growth through industrial and digital transformation.

"We are positioning ourselves as a regional hub for renewable energy, green innovation, and value-added mineral processing," President Mahama said. "We see vast potential in critical minerals and electric vehicle value chains, and we're keen to partner with Chinese investors in responsible mining and local processing to drive the global clean energy transition."

The President highlighted several investment opportunities in the project, including agro-industrial parks, tourism and hospitality hubs, inland water transport systems, renewable energy, and electric vehicle value chains.

The project is expected to benefit from China's expertise in renewable energy, digital technology, and manufacturing. President Mahama expressed optimism that the partnership would align Ghana's industrialization efforts with China's expertise, describing it as "a win-win opportunity for both countries."

The two countries have a long-standing partnership, with China being one of Ghana's largest investors. Between 2013 and 2024, Chinese investments in Ghana totaled nearly $4 billion, covering over 400 projects and creating thousands of jobs for Ghanaian youth.

The green city project is part of Ghana's broader strategy to transform its economy and become a major player in West Africa. With its rich natural resources and strategic location, Ghana is poised to benefit from the project, which is expected to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve the standard of living for its citizens.

As President Mahama noted, "The way we build our cities today will shape our country's carbon footprint, climate vulnerability, and social equity for generations to come." The green city project is a significant step towards creating a sustainable and prosperous future for Ghana.
