China Pledges Zero-Tariff Trade Support for Ghana's Resource Transformation
In a significant boost to Ghana's economic development, Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged China's support to help the West African nation transform its resource wealth into sustainable development through zero-tariff trade. The commitment was made during bilateral talks between President Xi and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama in Beijing on Monday.
The meeting, which coincided with the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China, focused on strengthening political and economic cooperation between the two nations. President Xi reaffirmed China's commitment to deepening its partnership with Ghana, calling for closer collaboration in strategic sectors such as mining, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and fisheries.
Ghana is expected to finalize a zero-tariff trade agreement with China by the end of October 2025, providing Ghanaian exporters, agro-processors, and manufacturers with access to the Chinese market. China pledged to support Ghana in transforming its resource wealth into sustainable development, promoting economic growth and industrialization.
Both leaders expressed confidence in building a more dynamic and mutually beneficial relationship between Ghana and China. President Mahama welcomed China's decision to grant zero-tariff access to Ghanaian and African products, describing it as a signal of confidence in the enduring partnership between the two nations. "It opens vast new markets for Ghanaian exporters, agro-processors, and manufacturers," he said.
The meeting reinforced the long-standing partnership between Ghana and China, with both leaders expressing optimism about deepening cooperation in key sectors. President Xi emphasized China's commitment to supporting Ghana's modernization efforts, tailored to its national conditions.
“China is ready to work with Ghana to promote the upgrading of cooperation in various fields and make greater contributions to building an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era,” President Xi said.
