Ghana, Japan Seal $13.44m Deal to Boost Power Supply in Tamale

Accra, Ghana - 14 March, 2025 - Ghana is set to boost its power supply stability in Tamale City, thanks to a $13.44 million grant agreement signed with Japan.

The deal, facilitated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will fund the construction of a new substation and power distribution lines, effectively strengthening the region's electricity infrastructure.

The agreement was signed by Ghana's Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and Japan's Chief Representative of JICA, Her Excellency Suzuki Momoko. This partnership is expected to drive economic development, job creation, and improved livelihoods in the Northern Region, ensuring reliable electricity access for businesses, households, and essential services.

The project is a significant step towards bridging Ghana's energy gap and promoting industrialization. Japan's commitment to supporting Ghana's development is evident in this partnership, which will have a lasting impact on the region's economic growth and stability.

According to JICA, the project aims to stabilize the power supply and contribute to the socio-economic development and strengthening of the basic infrastructure in Tamale.

The grant agreement is valued at approximately 1.92 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to $13.44 million.

This development is a welcome boost to Ghana's efforts to address its power supply challenges.
