Accra, Ghana - 14 March, 2025 - A prominent Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, has sparked a debate on the country's education system, arguing that practical skills like farming are more valuable than mastering the English language.

In an interview with TV XYZ on Thursday, 13 March 2025, Agongo boldly asserted that he would rather his child possess farming skills than proficiency in the English language, highlighting the disconnect between Ghana's education system and the realities of everyday life.

He questioned the long-standing emphasis on English as a mandatory subject, while agriculture and other practical skills remain optional. Mr. Agongo argued that this approach has contributed to Ghana's growing detachment from its cultural heritage and traditional practices.

“I’d prefer my child to know how to farm than to speak English,” he stated. “What is the benefit of English that is different from Twi or Ga?”

Drawing parallels with Japan, where cultural traditions remain deeply ingrained, Mr. Agongo emphasized the need for Ghana to reevaluate its education priorities and foster a greater appreciation for practical skills and cultural heritage.

"In Ghana, which is now like America, we've thrown everything away, and we're using social media to guide ourselves," he said.

The businessman also shared his concerns about the overindulgence of children, stressing the importance of teaching responsibility, resilience, and self-reliance. He urged parents to instill values that promote hard work, discipline, and community involvement.

"You should let them understand difficulties. Once there are difficulties, you think of alternative solutions," he explained.

"If we are not ready to do that and give an open cheque to our kids to do whatever they want, trust me, they will not go anywhere," he cautioned.
