GH₵2 is All You Pay: Mayor Clamps Down on Extortion in Accra's CBD
Accra's Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, is cracking down on unauthorized tolls, warning traders in the Central Business District (CBD) not to pay any fees beyond the official GH₵2 daily market toll charged by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
During a working visit to the CBD on Wednesday October 22,2025, Mayor Allotey expressed concern over reports of individuals extorting money from hawkers and market women, claiming to collect fees on behalf of the Assembly or the Mayor. He emphasized that such acts are illegal and urged traders to only pay the authorized fee.
The mayor explained that the Mahama administration was committed to protecting the poor and vulnerable, hence the directive that traders operating on pavements should not be charged any extra fees.
Addressing the traders, Hon. Allotey urged them to ensure compliance with the Assembly’s directives on street trading and sanitation enforcement.
