Supreme Court delays ruling on Ghana's Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, grants AG seven-day extension

Accra, Ghana - October 31, 2024 - Ghana's Supreme Court of Ghana has granted the Attorney General's Department an additional seven days to file its statement of case regarding the Ghanaian Family Values Bill's constitutionality.

This decision comes amidst growing controversy surrounding the bill, which aims to promote traditional family values but has raised concerns about potential human rights violations.

Journalist and private legal practitioner Richard Dela Sky is challenging the bill, arguing it infringes on individual rights, particularly those of marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ community.

Sky asserts the bill violates fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Ghanaian Constitution, such as equality before the law and freedom from discrimination.

The State Attorney has asked the Speaker's legal team to provide a Financial Impact Analysis report, which would shed light on the potential economic consequences of implementing the bill and how it aligns with the national budget and social services. This analysis is vital as it could significantly influence the case's outcome
