General Legal Council Petitioned to Sanction Godfred Dame for Alleged Professional Misconduct in Ato Forson Trial

Accra, Ghana - 23 May, 2025 - A petition has been filed with the General Legal Council (GLC) calling for sanctions against former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame over alleged professional misconduct in the criminal trial of Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Richard Jakpa.
The complaint, lodged by Daniel Kwame Ofosu-Appiah, a Ghanaian citizen, cites alleged ethical breaches and seeks disciplinary action under the Legal Profession Act.
The petition centers on an audio recording, admitted in court, which captures a private conversation between Mr. Dame and Mr. Jakpa, a key witness. According to the petitioner, the recording shows Mr. Dame attempting to sway Mr. Jakpa's testimony, compromising the fairness and integrity of the judicial process.
The alleged actions are said to contravene several provisions of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, including failure to act with honesty and integrity, engaging in deceit, and attempting to improperly influence a witness.
The petitioner argues that Mr. Dame's actions have undermined public confidence in the legal profession and the justice system, warranting urgent investigation and potential sanctions, including reprimand, suspension, or striking off the roll of lawyers.
The GLC has been urged to consider imposing appropriate sanctions under Section 16 of the Legal Profession Act.
“The actions of Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, as confirmed by judicial admission of evidence, have undermined public confidence in the legal profession and in our system of justice,” Mr. Ofosu-Appiah said.
“This matter deserves urgent and thorough investigation.”
