Bawumia's Track Record Doesn't Demonstrate Independent Mindedness - Nyaho Tamakloe

Accra, Ghana -04 May, 2025 - A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has expressed concerns over Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's leadership capabilities, questioning whether he possesses the boldness and independence required to lead the party into the 2028 elections.

Dr. Tamakloe questioned Dr. Bawumia's suitability, citing his experience as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team, and argued that he hasn't shown the necessary independence and determination to tackle Ghana's economic and social issues during an interview on TV3's Hot Issues programme on May 4.

Dr. Tamakloe emphasized the need for a leader who can make decisive decisions without undue interference, breaking free from political patronage and party interests.

Dr. Tamakloe rebuked Dr. Bawumia for staying in office despite disagreeing with the E-Levy policy, saying a leader should demonstrate principle-driven conviction by taking a strong stance.

''If it were me, I would have resigned,” he stated.

According to Dr. Tamakloe, Ghana requires bold leadership to tackle issues such as ballooning debt, rising unemployment, and eroded public trust in governance.

Dr. Tamakloe suggested that the NPP's national executives should step down before the 2028 elections to pave the way for an Interim Management Committee, which would ensure transparent party elections.

“Those who led us into opposition should have resigned on their own. We need a clean election devoid of monetary influence to elect the right people to lead the NPP,” he concluded.

He stressed the importance of a clean election process, free from monetary influence, to elect the right leaders for the party.

“The mess in which we find ourselves requires leadership that can make decisive decisions without any undue interference, and I doubt Dr. Bawumia has that temerity as a leader,” he said.

“We have reached a point in our nation’s history where the stakes are incredibly high, and the solutions require nothing short of bold, decisive leadership,” he added. “The economic and social challenges facing Ghana today—ballooning debt, rising unemployment, and an eroded public trust in governance—cannot be addressed by a leader who is constantly looking over his shoulder for approval from power brokers.”

“I am not convinced that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has shown that level of resolve,” he said. “Throughout his time as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team, Bawumia’s track record has not demonstrated the independent-mindedness or tenacity we need right now.”

Dr. Tamakloe's comments come as he prepares to launch his book, A Nation Into Retirement: A Narrative of a Statesman, which touches on these issues.
