Election 2024: Ghana Military deploys personnel to join Police to ensure security
As Ghana prepares to go to the polls, the country's military has been deployed to key locations to support the police in maintaining law and order. The move is aimed at ensuring a peaceful and secure electoral process.
In a statement released on Dec 6 and signed by the Director General of Public Relations, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) assured citizens that the deployment is a precautionary measure to provide standby support to the Ghana Police Service (GPS). The police will remain responsible for election security, with the military only intervening if requested.
The GAF has urged the public to cooperate with security personnel and to refrain from engaging in any activities that could disrupt the peace during the election period.
The military has reiterated its commitment to protecting the electoral process and fostering a peaceful atmosphere for the elections.
“Their role will be limited to providing standby support, with the primary responsibility for election security remaining under the Ghana Police Service. The military will only be called upon if requested by the police."
"This collaborative effort between the GAF and the GPS aims to maintain law and order during the elections while safeguarding the integrity of the process,” parts of the statement read.
