2.1 Million NPP Supporters Not Voting Cost Us Election - Bawumia

Accra, Ghana - 23 April, 2025 - Former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pinpointed low voter turnout among party supporters as the primary reason for the party's defeat in the 2024 general elections.

During the NPP's "Thank You" tour on April 23, Dr. Bawumia pointed out that roughly 2.1 million NPP supporters abstained from voting, contributing substantially to the party's loss.

The 2024 presidential election saw Dr. Bawumia face off against John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, who emerged victorious with 6,328,397 votes (56.55%). Dr. Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes (41.61%). Dr. Bawumia's comments suggest that internal factors, rather than external ones, were decisive in the election outcome.

According to Dr. Bawumia, if the 2.1 million NPP supporters had turned out to vote, the party might have won.

“Notwithstanding our hard work, we still suffered a heavy defeat. When you look at what happened, you will see that it was internal. Many of our supporters did not come out to vote.

“This is fundamentally why we lost the election. If you look at 2020 vis-à-vis 2024, 2.1 million of our supporters did not come out to vote. So, the key to victory is within the NPP because we decided not to vote. So, if we decide to vote, we will win,” he said.

This analysis underscores the importance of voter mobilization and turnout in determining electoral success. The NPP's loss marked a significant comeback for the NDC, which also secured a majority in Parliament.
