Election 2024: Accept the outcome of the elections, head to court if you disagree - Denmark Ambassador tells Political Parties
As Ghana prepares to head to the polls on December 7, the international community is calling for a peaceful and fair election. In an interview with Lead News' Florence Kyei on December 3, Denmark Ambassador to Ghana, Tom Norring, emphasized the importance of respecting freedom of speech while avoiding hate speech and intolerance.
Ambassador Norring appealed to political parties to accept the outcome of the elections and to use the judiciary to resolve any disputes.
He expressed hope that the peace pact signed by all political leaders would hold and that Ghana would continue on its democratic path.
''We also appeal to the political parties to accept the outcome of the elections whatever it would be and if they don't agree on the outcome, let them use the judiciary and not other means to rectify what they think the results should be,'' he stated.
''Hope is the last thing we have and lets see if that hope will also whipped out during the elections. But also we hope that the fact that all political leaders signed the peace pact is after all a signal to us that it will be a peaceful election and Ghana can continue to be a democratic path,'' he added.
Ghana's presidential election is expected to be a closely contested race, with 13 candidates vying for the top spot. The two front-runners, Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have been campaigning on issues such as economic growth, job creation, and good governance.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has also reported that over 18 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots on December 7. The commission has also assured that all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.
As Ghana prepares for this critical election, the international community is watching closely. The outcome of the election will not only determine the country's next president but also have implications for the country's democratic development and stability.
