EC sounds alarm on misinformation ahead of Ghana's Presidential polls
Accra, Ghana - Nov 13, 2024 - The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has expressed grave concerns over the potential disruption of the upcoming December 7 general elections due to the spread of fake news and disinformation.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, November 12, Dr. Serebour Quaicoo, Director of Training at the EC stated that unchecked misinformation can lead to voter confusion, heightened tensions, and damage to the election's credibility.
To mitigate these risks, the EC emphasizes the need for proactive measures to verify information before sharing it with the public.
According to him, the EC is taking steps to strengthen its communication channels, ensuring accurate information reaches the public swiftly.
He urged voters to rely on verified sources for election updates and report suspicious or unverified information.
Dr. Quaicoo warns that misinformation is a significant threat to the election's success, stating, “And I said that my greatest fear for Election 2024 is misinformation. Because both the traditional and the social media at times are in a hurry to put forward information without checking the authenticity.
“So I am saying that I am seeing ahead of us where people will come out with some videos that may not even be related to Ghana’s election.”
