NDC Demo: Party submits petition to Parliament
Accra, Ghana - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally submitted a petition to Parliament, intensifying its push for electoral reforms ahead of the 2024 elections.
NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey presented the petition, emphasizing the party's demand for a forensic audit of the voter register.
Kwetey argued that granting the audit would demonstrate transparency, stating, "If there's nothing to hide, there should be no issue."
The NDC is seeking a bi-partisan probe into the Electoral Commission's conduct, publication of forensic findings, re-exhibition of the voter register, correction of unauthorized vote transfers, and a definitive electoral timetable.
Additionally, the party is calling for an emergency meeting with regional stakeholders, including ECOWAS and the African Union, to address voter register concerns. The NDC also wants measures implemented to prevent future register manipulation.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accepted the petition, encouraging stakeholders to engage in discussions. "This is one of the several ways to enrich our democracy... if there are genuine concerns, we can raise them at the discussion table," he said.
The petition follows the NDC's "Enough Is Enough" demonstration, sparked by the Electoral Commission's refusal to permit a forensic audit. Protests were held across Ghana's 16 regions.
