CETAG Threatens to Take Industrial Action Over Government's Failure to Honour Agreements

Ghana's Colleges of Education Teachers Association (CETAG) has announced plans to embark on an indefinite strike, citing the government's repeated failure to honor agreements and implement a compulsory arbitration award issued by the National Labour Commission (NLC) in May 2023.

The decision, reached during an emergency meeting of CETAG's National Council, marks a significant escalation in the union's dispute with the government. CETAG has expressed frustration over the government's breach of commitments, which has negatively impacted its members' welfare and the broader education sector.

Despite previous assurances from government officials, including the Vice President and Ministers of Education and Employment, CETAG claims the government has disregarded the terms of an agreement signed in August 2024. This has left the union with no option but to resume industrial action to push for its demands.

In a Notice issued on Monday, December 23, CETAG called on stakeholders in teacher education, including the Ministry of Education and affiliate universities, to intervene urgently to prevent disruptions to the academic calendar. The union emphasized that its leadership has exhausted all diplomatic channels to resolve the issues and urged immediate action to avert further complications.

The strike, set to begin on December 31, 2024, has significant implications for Ghana's education sector, with potential disruptions to the academic calendar and impact on students' learning.
