Ghana's Presbyterian Church Joins Chorus Urging Akufo-Addo to Sign Anti-Gay Bill
In a significant development, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to give his assent to the contentious anti-gay bill before his administration comes to a close. This move follows the Supreme Court's dismissal of two petitions challenging the bill's constitutionality.
Speaking at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana's Bicentennial Anniversary celebration, Dr. Kwakye emphasized the importance of the bill, which he believes will help preserve African values through the gospel. He expressed confidence that the President would approve the bill, describing it as a "birthday gift" for the church.
“The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, for us Presbyterians, having given the bill our support at the time when the church was led by my predecessor, we interpreted this as our birthday gift for this year,'' he stated.
“Your Excellency, make our joy complete, we are confident that in these last days, you will make our joy complete by assenting the bill so that it becomes a law in Ghana.
“We seek to preserve the values of the African people through the gospel. And we are confident that Sir you will do so,'' he added.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill, has been a topic of national debate since its passage by Parliament on February 28, 2024. Proponents argue that it protects traditional family values, while critics claim it infringes upon human rights.
Despite the Supreme Court's dismissal of the petitions, the bill's future remains uncertain, as President Akufo-Addo has stated that he is awaiting resolutions to all pending legal issues before making a decision.
