Ayine's decision to discontinue the cases without consulting Mahama is bizarre and scary - Dame

Accra, Ghana - 14 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's Former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has launched a scathing attack on his successor, Dr. Dominic Ayine, accusing him of abandoning several high-profile criminal cases without consulting President John Dramani Mahama.
At a press conference on Friday, Feb 14, Dame described Ayine's decision as alarming and detrimental to the country's interests, highlighting the gravity of the cases which involve significant financial losses and are linked to the banking sector crisis.
The cases dropped include those against prominent figures such as the acting Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, and former NDC Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo. Ayine has cited ethical, professional, and evidentiary concerns as reasons for his decision, but Dame argues that the Attorney General's primary consideration should be the interest of the republic, not the position of defense lawyers.
''The people of Ghana should be very scared if we have an AG whose primary consideration in the discontinuation of criminal cases involving the loss of billions of Ghana cedis is the position of defence lawyers on charges preferred against their clients rather than the interest of the republic in the prosecution of crime.
“Even more scary and bizarre is the claim of Dr Ayine that he did not consult President John Dramani Mahama before taking the monumental decisions to discontinue the criminal cases.”
“The cases involve the loss of colossal sums of taxpayers’ monies, and some relate to the banking sector crisis which affected the Ghanaian economy,” he added.
