Mahama Seeks US Backing to Combat Terrorism in West Africa

Munich, Germany- 14 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has issued a urgent call for increased US support to tackle the growing security threats in West Africa.
The call came during a bilateral meeting with General Michael E. Langley, Commander of the US African Command (USAFRICOM), at the Munich Security Conference in Germany
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between Ghana and the US to counter terrorism, extremism, and other security challenges plaguing the West African subregion. The two leaders also discussed plans for joint maritime patrols to secure Ghana's coastal waters and combat piracy and illegal fishing.
Mahama emphasized the need for a stable and secure environment to drive economic growth and attract foreign investment.
“Today’s meeting with General Langley highlights Ghana’s commitment to enhancing our security posture in response to evolving threats across the region. We appreciate the support of the United States and are keen to expand our collaborative efforts,” Mahama stated.
The meeting underscores Ghana's commitment to regional security and its desire to deepen its partnership with the US to address the complex security challenges facing West Africa.
