Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine

Accra, Ghana - August 16, 2025 - The Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, has rejected demands by the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association to reinstate suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The two legal bodies had expressed serious concerns over the suspension, citing potential implications for judicial independence and constitutional safeguards in Ghana.

Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended on April 22, 2025, pending an investigation into alleged misconduct. The suspension has sparked a national debate, with some arguing that it undermines the judiciary's independence. The Chief Justice has since filed a lawsuit at the ECOWAS Court of Justice, challenging the constitutionality of her suspension.

The Bar Council and Commonwealth Lawyers Association have raised several concerns regarding the suspension, including ,lack of transparency ,due process and judicial independence.
